Legendary Zelma Long Library Collection

This impressive collection of magnificent wines thoughtfully curated by pioneering winemaker Zelma Long and her husband, winegrower Phil Freese, will be the crowning jewel in your wine cellar!
Lot Includes:
- A rare selection of library wine collections from the cellar of legendary winemaker Zelma Long
Zelma was the first woman to assume senior management of a Californian winery, Simi Winery and founded the American Vineyard Foundation to help finance research in enology and viticulture. Zelma also founded the American Viticulture and Enology Research Network (AVERN). She is a James Beard Award winner for Wine Professional of the Year, was named a California Wine Pioneer by Wine Spectator, and received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of California, Davis. Zelma and Phil have been involved in winemaking and viticulture projects around the world and serve as mentors to aspiring viticulturalists and winemakers. After 50 years of winemaking, Zelma is donating some of the incredible, historic red wines from her personal cellar in this once-in-a-lifetime auction lot.
While the labors of many revered vineyards and winemakers are revealed in these fantastic collections, of particular interest are the Motherlode Collection with artist Anya Gallacio and the Winemakers Collection – Château d’Arsac. Sonoma County winemaker Barbara Lindblom assisted Zelma with both of these projects. For the Motherlode Collection, Anya approached Zelma in 2005 to do a project for her with Sonoma County wines and Zelma suggested a series of Zinfandels from old or unique vineyards. Peter Seghesio gave Zelma access to special vineyards and they made one finished barrel of each wine; it was bottled under Barbara’s supervision, and Anya produced the cases and artwork such that each case has one bottle of each of five vineyards and one bottle of a blend. The wooden boxed set is signed by artist Anya Gallacio and Zelma Long.
The Winemakers Collection – Château d’Arsac – includes a wooden boxed set with each year from the same vineyards and varietals with the cuvée created by a different famed winemaker, one of whom was Zelma Long. Château d’Arsac is one of the oldest wine estates of the Médoc region and has a rich and eventful history that can be traced back over nine hundred years. Wine lovers will adore this study of vintage differences in a single set of vineyards in Bordeaux.
